Castoreum

Castoreum is one of the many nebulous “natural ingredients” used to flavor food. Though it isn’t harmful, it is unsettling. Castoreum is a substance made from beavers’ castor sacs, or anal scent glands. These glands produce potent secretions that help the animals mark their territory in the wild. In the food industry, however, 1,000 pounds of the unsavory ingredient are used annually to imbue foods—usually vanilla or raspberry flavored—with a distinctive, musky flavor.

You’ll find it in: Potentially any food containing “natural ingredients”

Parabens

These synthetic preservatives are used to inhibit mold and yeast in food. The problem is parabens may also disrupt your body’s hormonal balance. A study in Food Chemical Toxicology found that daily ingestion decreased sperm and testosterone production in rats, and parabens have been found present in breast cancer tissues.

You’ll find it in: Baskin-Robbins sundaes

More:
http://health.yahoo.net/experts/eatthis/8-ingredients-you-never-want-see-nutrition-label

no more icecream for me papa!

Breaking Up (with Junk Food) is Hard to Do

http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivation_articles.asp?id=446

Editor's Note: The following three letters were finalists in our June 2005 Break-Up Letter Contest. We'd like to thank everyone who participated and voted. While the contest is closed, you can still read the top three letters below.

Letter #1

Dear Abby,

Help! I have been trying for a long time to break up with this friend of mine (we’ll call him Snickers because that is his real name. He’s not innocent and does not need to be protected). He just can’t seem to take the hint. We’ve been together for longer than I care to admit. We’ve had some wonderfully sweet times together. No matter how tired I get of my other friends, Snick is always there. At first it was okay. We were a pretty good team. But then he would just never go away. Sometimes I wanted to be alone, but every time I turned around he was there. For a long time I enjoyed having him in my purse or in my top dresser drawer. Then I realized he was keeping me from some very important relationships. I barely knew Apple and Banana, and Broccoli just didn’t feel welcomed when Snick was around. It would have been different if he liked my other friends. We could have all spent time together. But Snick became so selfish. He wanted to be the only one. I’ve tried to explain how I feel. He has become so possessive of me, wanting all of my time and attention. Frankly, I’m afraid of him. Sometimes I see him watching me from the pages of a magazine, from the TV, even from my own kitchen cupboards. I’ve become a victim of Snicker stalking. Please help me! If only I could make him understand there still is room in my life for him. But there are others I want to spend time with also. What can I do?

Desperate

Dear Desperate,

Your problem is not uncommon. Many people out there find themselves in relationships that are too possessive, too selfish. I can sense from your letter that you are very upset with Snick. Take a moment to calm down and think clearly. Snick is feeling threatened right now. He used to be tops on your list. Now you’re bringing in more Apples, more Whole Grains, more Green Beans. Of course Snick is going to try harder than ever to get your attention. My advice to you is not to shut him out entirely. Invite your other friends in so you can all get to know each other. Let him hang around. As soon as he feels your friendship is secure, he won’t be so apt to require all of your attention. Let him know you still care. Let him know that most of your time is going to be devoted to Apple and Broccoli, Whole Grains and the others. If he feels you still care for him, he will be content to share you with others.

Abby

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Letter #2

French Fries, we have to talk.

I don't know how to say this, but –

I can't see you anymore.

I just can't do it—the clandestine meetings, the sneaking around—it's just too much for me. My husband is beginning to suspect something.

Just yesterday, he found one of you on the floor of the car. I laughed nervously and denied everything but I think he knew I was lying.

I felt so ashamed!

And it started me thinking - I really love him!

We made a promise to each other, and I know you probably can't understand this, but our life together means more to me than anything.

I know, I know, we've had some good times together and yes, you've been there for me -- like the time I was so upset when my boss got mad at me. And when I was so nervous about giving that speech.

No, no, it's not you, it's me! I've changed.

I've found some new ways to deal with my emotions. And they're really helping. One thing I do is meditate or pray every night. Nothing happened at first, but over time, I find myself a little calmer, a little more capable of handling life's everyday stresses.

I also try to walk every day. You should try it, it really does clear your head!

And if I really get stressed, I write it all out in my journal.

So, you see, French Fries, I have to thank you for helping me out when I needed it.

But I think I can take it from here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Letter #3

My Dear Beloved,

I'll never forget the day I met you, Mr. BLT Pizza. I was on a church youth group retreat in the winter of 2003. We stopped by a Happy Joe's Pizza Parlor on our way back to the cabin. I was expecting a pleasant time, for the parlor name indicated a cheerful, delightful atmosphere. I certainly wasn't looking for anyone new. A new love in my life was out of the question, for I had been dragged down and chubbed up by your kind before. The other women at the table spotted you first. They said you looked "delicious" and just wanted to "eat you up!" To be honest, you weren't my type. I wanted something safe and reliable; I wanted the strong, sturdy type. Plain ol' Mr. Cheese beckoned to me; however, the women were wild cats and insisted on you. Now, I don't hold them responsible. How were they to know you would slowly destroy my life? How could they know that your initials didn't only stand for Bacon Lettuce Tomato, but they also stood for Big Lying Traitor?

You were so deceiving. You covered yourself in layers of crisp lettuce and ripe tomatoes that I had to peel away to find the bad parts like fatty bacon, oozing mayo, and greasy crust. I couldn't figure out what I craved about you. What was I drawn to? I tried to convince myself that your lettuce and tomato exterior drew me to you. I told myself you were really a lettuce and tomato type of guy at heart. I'll admit it now; I was drawn to the bad boy in you. The mayo got me! The mayo! My family begged me to bid you farewell, but I couldn't. I was addicted to you. With a wild heart (and stomach and tongue and lips), I defied my family to be with you. When you invaded my mind, I wanted you right then and there. I'd throw you on the table and devour you. I found myself staying in with you more and more often. I invited a friend to hang out with us a few times, but I was too greedy. I couldn't share you!

Soon my thighs were straining to escape my jeans. I think they were trying to tell me to escape you. My stomach was rolling over my waistband. I felt it. I saw it. I saw the me that was the result of you. I saw my chin, Mrs. Chiseled Chin, and her new partner, Mr. Chubby Chin, who moved in after you came into my life. They had united to form a chin family. I didn't want to wait around for their children to emerge. It was enough.

I tried weaning myself off of you. I saw you less frequently and asked for smaller portions of you, but I couldn't bring myself to a complete halt. I kept going back to you and forgiving you for mistreating me. But not anymore! I've burned all your boxes with relish. I've rid my phone of your number. I've realized that I've mistreated myself more than you have mistreated me. I've allowed you to take control of my life. It's MY life. It's not OUR life. I have control of my life, and you don't belong in it with me. I don't need to be Mrs. BLT Pizza and have my initials stand for Bulky Lard Tooshie. You were a little too wild for me. I think it's time for me to find a real life partner, and that Mr. H2O over there is looking pretty refreshing!

You Don't Deserve the Sincerely Here You Jerk!
N

I keep reading these articles about living large on a small budget overseas. Is it possible or just hype?

International Living Postcards—your daily escape
Friday, July 20, 2012

Dear International Living Reader,

Rebecca moved from New Orleans to Granada, Nicaragua because she and her husband fell in love with the colonial architecture and lake breezes.

As a bonus, this is a city where your dollars can really stretch...

Len Galvin
Managing Editor, IL Postcards

"Our Monthly Budget is around $700"
By Rebecca Teeters

The lake breeze is blowing through my hair as I kick back with an 87-cent beer. Small white-tipped waves move across the water, palm trees rustle, and a group of tourists is stepping off a small fishing boat after an island-hopping tour. A perfect afternoon after a morning’s shopping trip to the local market.

Granada, Nicaragua, has plenty of vendors and lots to choose from. I bought a week’s worth of fresh fruit for our small B&B for less than $5—white pineapple so sweet you yearn for more, cantaloupe that waters in your mouth, and two dozen mandarins for fresh-squeezed juice, onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers.

Nicaragua’s best-preserved colonial city, Granada is a popular tourist attraction with a thriving expat community. My husband Shylow and I came here in May 2010 and fell in love with the beautiful architecture, friendly locals, and seriously low cost.

After leaving the U.S. and all that we were used to, we found a place where our hard-earned money could stretch past the house mortgage without giving up the things that were important to us. Our monthly budget is around $700. That includes our house payment, eating out or ordering delivery pizza, enjoying a day or two at the local pool, mingling with friends at our favorite watering hole, cable TV, and Internet.

Granada is a small town and, although the taxis are less than 50 cents, I generally choose to walk—it’s so pleasant. I say hola to friends and neighbors, check out the ever-growing restaurant scene, and do a bit of window shopping along the way.

This morning I saw a new breakfast place to try. I’ll often stop for a fresh fruit juice and pineapple pancakes. At around $3, it doesn’t break the bank...

New Saab 340B Aircraft

Seaborne is acquiring the Saab 340B to add to our fleet fourth quarter 2012 and will begin flights January 2013. The Saab offers:
•34 Seats with comfort levels at or better than most jetliners
•Quick! The Saab will give Seaborne the fastest overall travel times on the routes we serve!

This fuel efficient aircraft will replace the Twin Otter on San Juan flights while supplementing St. Croix/St. Thomas flying. A minimum of three aircraft are planned to be in service by March 2013.
http://www.seaborneairlines.com/

Seven daily flights from PR to Tortola by March 2013!

June 29th, 2012

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Seaborne Airlines has commitment to having seven daily flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Tortola by March 2013.

The disclosure was made this morning June 29, 2012 in the House of Assembly sitting by Premier and Minister for Tourism Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith who was at time was giving an update on the tourism agenda in the Territory.

“Just yesterday we were able to confirm that our discussions with Seaborne Airlines have been fruitful with their announcement that they will have seven daily flights from San Juan to Tortola by March 2013,” he said, adding that the negotiations included the Seaborne’s three new Saab 340B 30-seater planes.

According to an article published in the St. John’s Source yesterday June 28, which speaks about Seaborne’s acquisition of the new planes, it said the planes will be used on airport to airport routes for the Seaborne Shuttle, not on the routes where planes land on water. The 340Bs will replace those used on the San Juan to St. Thomas and St. Croix routes and supplement those used between St. Thomas and St. Croix.

The article further quoted Seaborne’s marketing consultant Angelia Hanne, as saying that with American Airlines ending flights out of San Juan to St. Thomas and St. Croix, Seaborne expects to fill in the gap.

The new planes are part of Seaborne’s expansion program, and Hanne said the airline will start San Juan to Tortola services in October and plan to double the number of flights between St. Thomas and St. Croix.

Meanwhile, noting that the principal challenge currently facing tourism in the Territory is that of air access and getting visitors to the Territory in an efficient and cost effective manner, Hon. Smith said as government awaits its long term plan to address the situation with the expansion of the Terrance B.Lettsome International Airport, they have embarked on several interim measures to get tourists to the VI in a cost effective and effective manner starting from this winter.

“Madam Speaker, in this regard the Board and the Premier’s Office have engaged a strategy which focuses on getting visitors to the BVI via San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Cyril E. King International Airport in St. Thomas and for our European visitors, the VC Bird International Airport in Antigua. The Board via its Air Lift Committee and where necessary myself as Premier, the Ministers of Communication and Works and Natural Resources and Labour have met at the highest levels with all of the principal carriers serving or proposing to serve the Territory for the upcoming winter season and beyond.”

He explained that the objective of those meetings was to ensure that should American Eagle discontinue its service to the Territory during the next season, that the destination will have in place alternate options for meeting its seat capacity into the Territory from San Juan. “We are also working to improve the air capacity from San Juan and St. Thomas into TB Lettsome International and Virgin Gorda. These discussions are proceeding with a view to reaching a conclusion in a timely manner for next winter.”

Regarding air access via the Cyril E. King International Airport on St. Thomas, the Territory’s leader said the objective is to better coordinate the various ferry schedules with the arrival and departure schedules of the airlines servicing the Cyril E. King Airport.

“Additionally, we are also keen on improving the visitor reception at Cyril E. King for BVI bound visitors. In this regard, we have opened discussions with our tourism counterparts in the USVI with a view to addressing this matter. We are also in discussion with the various ferry operators about establishing an online booking and reservation capability for visitors. Once these arrangements have been established, the BVI Tourist Board will immediately engage in a vigorous promotional campaign to drive BVI bound traffic via St. Thomas.”

http://www.virginislandsnewsonline.com/news/seven-daily-flights-from-pr-to-tortola-by-march-2013

Anyone from DHTA, Discover Dominica, Invest Dominica, Ministry of Tourism taking note of Seaborne Airlines fleet expansion & upgrade?

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday June 7, 2012 – Even as Caribbean governments and tourism officials have lamented the negative impact from of higher travel taxes and duties imposed in overseas source markets, two island authorities are introducing new travel taxes.

The government of Jamaica announced yesterday (June 6) that an agreement has been reached between the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) and the government on tax measures to be imposed on the tourism sector under the 2012-2013 Budget.

The agreement will see the introduction of a US$ 20 fee for each arriving passenger, whose trip originates abroad, as of August 1, 2012. Effective September 1, 2012 an accommodation tax will be introduced for each occupied room per night of US$ 1 for properties with less than 51 rooms, US$ 2 for hotels with 51-100 rooms, and US$4 for hotels with 101 rooms and above.

This news follows on the heels of last week’s announcement coming out of Antigua and Barnuda that the government had presented and passed the Airport Administration Charge Act, 2012, which now takes the Antigua’s overall airport taxes to US $93.75 up from US $63.75, and will be built into the cost of travellers’ tickets.

This move was strongly condemned in March by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which reportedly wrote a strongly worded letter to Civil Aviation and Culture Minister John Maginley stating that the new taxes would stand at a level that far exceeded the regional average and stood well beyond a viable level for airlines.

The IATA Assistant Director of Government & Infrastructure Affairs Cyriel Kronenburg, is said to have stated in the letter that: “plans for yet another major increase in costs to passengers will seriously damage the ability of airlines serving Antigua & Barbuda to operate in a profitable manner, and will surpass any revenue growth for the airport and will damage the health of Antigua & Barbuda’s economy and tourism sector.”

However, the Antigua and Barbuda government remained undeterred and following last Wednesday’s passage of the act, it has mounted a strong defence of the move. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer described the new tax measure as reasonable and fair while brushing aside suggestions that the move would bring irrevocable harm to the country’s tourism industry.

“Even if it does initially, that is not going to be sustained over time. There might be an initial reaction but Antigua & Barbuda is a destination that sells itself,” Spencer is reported to have said.

The prime minister said the airport needed to be in a position where it could effectively pay for itself in the long term and the improvements to the airport terminal came at a price.

“People would know that if they want a modern airport with all the amenities, then the money has to come from somewhere. We have taken the view to be reasonable and fair with this,” Spence is quoted as saying.

Similarly, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, Dr Wykeham McNeill, has staunchly defended his government’s new tax measure.

“I am convinced that these measures provide a win-win situation as they will ensure that we meet our revenue target while protecting our industry especially our small properties. I want to commend the JHTA and other stakeholders who put forward alternative proposals from which we could eventually secure a workable compromise. I also wish to acknowledge the hard work of the technical teams from the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment and the Ministry of Finance and Planning, who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this collaborative effort,” said the minister in the press statement issued yesterday.

President of the JHTA, Evelyn Smith, was quoted in the statement as saying that the levels for the new tax measures were arrived at “in a spirit of co-operation” and with the aim to arrive at an outcome that was beneficial to all parties involved.

http://www.caribbean360.com/index.php/business/583097.html#ixzz1xDHHYBsx

LIAT Air Fares will no doubt increase!

May 31st, 2012

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Kraus-Manning, the company hired by Government to carry out an impact assessment of the environment for the expansion of the Territory’s airport runway, has handed in its findings to Government.

Director of the company’s Caribbean operations, Tony Monaghan, informed this news agency that the report was handed in on Tuesday, May 29, 2012.

This means Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. Kedrick Pickering, Director of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) and Permanent Secretary Ronald Berkeley all have copies to pour over the contents.

For now, any information pertaining to the reports would have to come from the Minister and his PS this news agency was told, and at the time this article was published, they were in a meeting.

Meanwhile, to ensure a comprehensive report, Kraus-Manning had used waves and currents monitoring equipment as part of their assessment.

Several pieces of the equipment were placed underwater in February 2012 to catch the worse of winter swells in the surrounding areas of Well Bay, Trellis Bay and Long Bay to accurately determine the flow of sand and sediments of the surrounding islands and beaches.

Airport expansion project
Two meetings were held in March 2012, where Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Hon. Dr. Kedrick Pickering announced that Government will be going ahead with the expansion of the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.

Residents were informed that Government was leaning towards option six, which will cost about $38M. With this option, the runway will be extended to some 7,000 feet from 4,000 plus feet, and accommodate Airbus 319, 320 and the Embraer 190.

It is also expected to reduce the environmental impact, which would save the salt pond and beaches in the area, reduce crosswinds, and accommodate code C and D aircrafts.

However, the disadvantages include higher weather minimums- meaning jets would have to use a height of about 1,290 feet and the runway must be visual, as well as the circling approach.

The concerns include future widening will have an environmental impact on Trellis Bay and the salt ponds

http://www.virginislandsnewsonline.com/news/epa-report-for-airport-expansion-is-ready

Mean while St Vincent & the Grenadines Brand New Argyle International Airport will be completed in 2013 and operational in 2014 with a 9000 ft runway for Non Stop jet service to the US, Europe.

Allen says he tolerated Gates’ explosions, for the most part, even though he desperately wanted to tell him that ‘working with you is like being in hell.’”

Toor reports, “The two hit a particularly rough patch after Gates allegedly plotted to squeeze Allen out of the company, not long after he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lymphoma — an incident that spurred Allen to leave Microsoft, shortly thereafter.”

:-/

Greetings

USB Stick Contains Dual-Core Computer, Turns Any Screen Into an Android Station

http://blog.laptopmag.com/usb-stick-contains-dual-core-computer-turns-any-screen-into-an-android-station

Is that a USB key in your pocket or a dual-core computer? Today, Norwegian company FXI technologies showed off a USB stick-sized portable computer prototype, complete with a dual-core 1.2-GHz Samsung Exynos ARM CPU (same as in the Galaxy S II), 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI-out and a microSD card slot for memory. Codenamed Cotton Candy because its 21 gram weight is the same as a bag of the confection, the tiny PC enables what its inventor calls “Any Screen Computing,” the ability to turn any TV, laptop, phone, tablet, or set-top box into a dumb terminal for its Android operating system.

The Cotton Candy has a USB 2.0 connector on one end and an HDMI jack on the other. When connected to an HDTV, it uses the HDMI port for video, the USB for power, and Bluetooth to connect to a keyboard, mouse, or tablet for controlling the operating system. The device can output up to 1080p so even a full HD screen can display the Candy’s preloaded Android 2.3 operating system at its native resolution. The dual core CPU is powerful enough to play local 1080p video or stream HD clips from the Web. Learn more and see our hands on video below.
